BATTLEFIELD PROMOTION to 2nd Lieutenant.



TO THE RHINE



The actual time of these photos is a guess. The division had broken through the Sigfried Line and the 179th was “motorized” as it advanced to the Rhine. The train of transport in this detail shows jeeps and civilian cars.

These photos also seem as if they were taken during the same cold weather. Behind Dad is a jeep trailer.

The date should read 1945, not 1944. A fully staffed heavy machine gun platoon had one officer and 35 other ranks.
