Battle at Kesternich began. Kesternich is a small town located just inside the German border.

The site's banner is a detail of a photo showing the men of the 1st platoon, Company H, 2nd Battalion, 179th Infantry, commanded by then 2nd Lt. Albert L. Young, a 3rd generation Chinese-American. From 1943-45 he quickly rose in rank from private to corporal, sergeant, staff sergeant, then battlefield promotion to 2nd lieutenant and later, 1st lieutenant.
